Ask your meetings

Type a question and get an answer from your meetings. Each point in the answer links to the moment it came from.

What Ask needs

Ask is answered by an AI provider that you choose, with your own key. It does not run on your Mac. Apple Intelligence on your Mac writes notes, but it does not answer Ask. Add a key first. AI keys and which brain answers shows how.

Without a key, the Ask bar says Ask needs an AI provider. and offers a Set up AI button that opens Settings. After your trial ends, Ask keeps working.

Where to ask

KeptNote's Ask page. The heading reads Hi Sam, ask anything. Under it, a box that says Ask across your meetings with a model menu set to Auto. Below it, an open thread with the answer The launch moved to Tuesday the 20th, grouped under three meeting titles with dates, and the buttons Say more, Shorter and Email this. A Recent list of earlier questions is at the bottom.

The Ask page. The answer is grouped by meeting, and the buttons under it ask a follow-up.

You can ask from four places. The question is about different material in each.

  • Home. The bar at the bottom says Ask across your meetings. It looks through all of your meetings.
  • The Ask page. Press Ask in the rail. It has a bigger box, the heading Hi and your first name, a list of Recent questions, and Playbooks. It also looks through all of your meetings.
  • Inside a note. The bar at the bottom says Ask about this meeting. It looks at that one meeting.
  • During a meeting. On the Notes page, the bar says Ask anything. See What did I miss. The bar is not on the Reef page.

Press Command-J to move the cursor to the bar on Home, in a note or in a live meeting. In the search box that Command-K opens, type your question and press Tab to ask it across all meetings.

Ask looks at one meeting or at everything. It has no way to limit a question to a folder, a series or a date range.

Ask a question

  1. Click the bar and type. For example: What did Northwind ask for?

  2. Press Return. A card opens above the bar, and the answer appears as it is written. Press the stop button to cut it short. KeptNote keeps the words so far.

  3. Read the answer. Press a time at the end of a point to open the transcript at that moment.

Under the newest answer, three buttons help you go on: Say more, Shorter and Email this. The first two ask a follow-up in the same thread. Email this opens the answer as an unsent draft in your mail app. In a note, the draft is addressed to the people on the invite.

The line above an answer says how long the model thought and which model answered, for example Thought for 6s and the model name with your key. Under each bar, a line reminds you: KeptNote’s AI can make mistakes. The transcript is the record.

Check the sources

The model is told to end each point with the time of the words behind it. KeptNote draws those times as small chips. Press one, and the transcript opens at that moment. Its tooltip reads Show in the transcript.

When you ask across meetings, the answer is grouped under the title and date of each meeting. A chip opens that meeting’s note with the transcript at that time. If KeptNote cannot tell which meeting a heading means, it shows the heading without links. It never links to a guess.

The suggestion chip

When the bar is empty, it shows one chip at its right end. The chip picks a playbook that fits the moment. You press it, and Ask runs it. A few examples:

  • On Home: Open to-dos, which lists every open to-do across your notes.
  • While recording: What did I miss.
  • After a sales call, or a call with others on the invite: Follow-up email.
  • After a stand-up: Team update.
  • After an interview: Interview scorecard. After user research: Key insights.
  • When the note has open check boxes: My to-dos, with a count.
  • Before a 1:1: Agenda for next time.
  • Otherwise: Decisions and next steps.

Playbooks with the slash key

Type / in the bar to list playbooks. The list narrows as you type. Use the Up and Down keys, then press Return, Enter or Tab to choose. In a note, the list holds the After a meeting playbooks. On Home and on the Ask page, it holds the Across meetings playbooks. The bar has no other slash commands. Templates and playbooks lists them and shows how to make your own.

Threads and history

A thread is a conversation. Each new question joins the open thread, and KeptNote sends up to 10 earlier turns with it so a follow-up makes sense. The card has these controls.

  • History. A list of your earlier threads, newest first.
  • New thread. It starts a new one. The old one stays in History.
  • Copy. It copies the newest finished answer.
  • The x. It closes the card. The thread stays in History.

Threads are not written to disk. They last as long as KeptNote runs, and KeptNote keeps the newest 20. If you quit the app, they are gone. On Home, a thread you used in the last 30 minutes continues, and the bar says Continue chat. After that, the next question starts a new thread. KeptNote has no way to rename or delete a single thread.

What Ask sends

Ask sends text to the provider you chose, with your key, only when you ask. It never sends audio.

  • One meeting: your question, the meeting title, the note, the whole transcript, and your profile.
  • All meetings: KeptNote first searches your Mac for the words in your question and the two before it. It sends only lines from the transcripts of the best six meetings, with a line before and after each match. In total this stays under 12,000 characters. It does not send notes. If nothing matches, KeptNote sends nothing and says Nothing in your meetings mentions that yet.
  • Earlier turns of the thread, up to 10, and your note language.

Your profile is the name, job title, company and description you add in Settings, on the Profile tab. It is optional. What stays on your Mac has more.
