The menu bar icon
The icon is the KeptNote shell, drawn the way macOS draws its own menu bar items. It turns dark on a light menu bar and light on a dark one. A small badge at its lower right shows what KeptNote is doing.
- No badge: KeptNote is ready.
- A solid dot: KeptNote is recording.
- The shell fades and two bars show: the recording is paused.
- A small ring: KeptNote is writing your note.
VoiceOver reads each state in words, for example KeptNote is recording. The icon does not animate. It changes only when the state changes.
In Settings, in the Calendar section, the switch Show my next meeting in the menu bar puts the title and time of your next meeting beside the icon. It shows only while nothing records.
The capsule
KeptNote shows a capsule only when it starts a recording by itself. That happens when you turned on Always for Zoom (or another app) for a call, or Always record this meeting for a recurring meeting.
The capsule appears at the top right of your screen. It shows the name of the call or the meeting, a clock, the level bars and a stop button. It says Starting… until the recording is confirmed.
- Move your pointer onto it and a pause button slides in beside stop. Press it to pause, and again to resume.
- Click the name to open the notes.
- Right-click for Open Notes, Pause Recording or Resume Recording, Stop and Save, and the line that removes the rule, for example Don’t Always Record Zoom Calls or Don’t Always Record This Meeting.
After eight seconds the capsule folds into the edge tab. It waits while your pointer is on it. The capsule never takes the keyboard from your call.
The edge tab
While you record, a slim tab sits at the edge of your screen. It shows the shell, the level bars and a small clock. It shows while another app is in front. It hides when the KeptNote window is in front, because the recording bar says the same thing there.
Point at the tab. A card opens beside it with the meeting title, the clock, the latest lines of the live transcript, a pause button, a stop button and Open Notes. If the meeting began by a rule, the card also has Don’t Always Record.
Click the tab to open the notes.
Drag the tab up or down, or across the screen. When you let go, it settles onto the nearer side, left or right, at the height where you left it.
Right-click for Open Notes, Pause Recording or Resume Recording, Stop and Save, and Move to Left Edge or Move to Right Edge.
The tab stays clear of the menu bar and the Dock. KeptNote remembers where you put it.
To turn the tab off, open Settings, go to the General tab, and under During a meeting turn off Live meeting indicator.
