Where this stands
KeptNote for iPhone is coming to the App Store. It is not there yet, so you cannot download it today. This article describes how it works so you know what to expect.
The iPhone app uses the same 14 day trial idea as the Mac app. After the trial, your meetings stay readable, searchable and exportable. Only new recording stops until you unlock KeptNote.
What the iPhone records
KeptNote on iPhone records the room. It uses the iPhone microphone. It cannot record phone, FaceTime or Zoom calls on that iPhone, because iOS does not allow it. For calls, use KeptNote on your Mac.
The first time you record, iOS asks for permission to use the microphone. Allow it. iOS shows its own microphone indicator while KeptNote records. KeptNote does not hide it.
Put the iPhone near the middle of the table. A recording keeps going when you lock the screen.
Start a recording
On Home, press Record.
The screen says Ready to record. Press Start recording. KeptNote asks nothing else and starts at once.
To leave without recording, press Cancel at the top left.
The link What KeptNote can record at the foot opens a short sheet that repeats what you read above. The widgets, the Control Center control and Siri also bring you to this screen. They never start the microphone by themselves. You press Start recording, so nothing records by accident. iPhone widgets and controls shows the ways in.
While it records
The top of the screen names the state: Recording, Paused or Saving. Below it, a switch lets you show Notes or the Reef, as on the Mac. The controls at the foot show the level, the time, and buttons to pause, resume and stop.
- Type notes on the Notes page. Each line gets the time you typed it, so it can link to the moment later.
- If a call comes in, KeptNote pauses and shows Paused for a call. It picks up again when the call ends. Everything recorded before the call is kept.
- If iOS pauses the recording, the screen says Paused by your iPhone. If there is no microphone, it says No microphone.
- If the iPhone runs low on space, KeptNote says how many minutes are left. If it fills up, KeptNote stops and says that everything up to then is saved.
To mark a moment while you record, use the Live Activity on the Lock Screen, a Mark control, or an Apple Watch. See Mark a moment.
Stop and the note
Press the stop button. The screen says Saving your recording. KeptNote then transcribes the audio and writes your note on the iPhone. You can leave the app while it works. When the note is ready, KeptNote can tell you with a quiet notice. See Live Activity, note ready and reminders.
