Type notes during a meeting
The live meeting page opens on Notes. The page says Write notes, or press / for templates. Type as you would in any text editor. KeptNote saves every change as you type. If saving fails, a message says Notes were not saved.
- Each line gets the recording time at the moment you first type it. You do not see the time in the line. Point at a line and its time shows in the left margin, for example 00:12:40.
- To add a visible time, choose Insert Timestamp in the Note menu, or press Option-Command-T. KeptNote adds the time, such as [12:40], on a new line at the end of your notes. This works only while a recording runs.
- Press / at the start of a line to insert a template. See Templates and playbooks.
Your typed notes matter. When KeptNote writes the finished note, it treats your notes as the outline of what mattered. It uses your times to find the words near each note.
The finished note
After you stop, KeptNote writes the note. The note can hold headings, paragraphs, bullet lists, numbered lists and check boxes. The sections depend on the template. The standard General template gives Context, Discussion, Decisions and Next steps.

A finished note, with its transcript open on the right.
- Next steps are check boxes. Click one to tick it. KeptNote saves the change in the note.
- When the note has two or more headings, a strip under the title lets you jump to a section. Its label for assistive tools is Jump to a section of this note.
- You can select any text and copy it.
- A line at the end says how the note was written. See Improve a note.
You cannot edit the text of a finished note. To get a new version, rewrite the note. Improve a note shows how. Your own typed notes stay editable. See below.
Time chips
A time chip is the small time at the end of a line. It says where in the meeting that line comes from, for example 4:12, or 1:04:12 after the first hour. It stays out of sight until you point at the line, or move to it with the keyboard.
Point at a line in the note. The time shows at the end of the line.
Press the time. The tooltip says Show in the transcript.
The transcript opens beside the note and scrolls to that moment. The sentence behind the line is marked, and the chip stays lit while the transcript is open.

A line, its time chip, and the sentence it came from.
Chips are on paragraphs, bullets and numbered items. Headings, quotes and code have none. If a line rests on several moments, the chip opens the first one. A note you typed yourself has no chips, because a chip comes from the transcript. A note imported from another app has chips only if its text carries times.
The chip opens the place where the words start in the transcript. That can sit a moment away from the raw time. Always trust the transcript over the note. A note can be wrong, and the transcript is the record.
Quotes
A quote is a line in the note that holds words from the meeting, shown in italics. The note writer keeps quotes word for word, in the language they were spoken. It never translates a quote, even when you choose another language for your notes. A quote line has no time chip. To find the quote in the transcript, open the transcript and search for a few of its words. The transcript panel shows how.
My notes and Enhanced
If you typed notes and KeptNote wrote a note, a switch with two parts appears under the title: My notes and Enhanced. Enhanced is the written note, and it shows first. My notes is what you typed.
- You can edit My notes. KeptNote saves every keystroke. A line you add after the meeting has no time.
- Editing My notes does not change Enhanced. To write the note again, use Rewrite. It reads your typed notes again.
- KeptNote remembers your choice only until you quit the app.
If you typed no notes, there is no switch.
Rename, move or delete a note
- Rename. Click the title, or choose Rename in the Note menu (Command-R). Type a new name. Press Return to save. Press Escape to cancel. KeptNote never replaces a title you typed. If it guessed the title, the page shows Untitled until you type one or the written note names it.
- Move. Press the … button at the top right, and choose a folder under Move to folder. See Folders and Mac folder links.
- Delete. In the … menu, choose Move to Trash. The note leaves your list and a message offers Undo. The recording, the transcript and the notes move to Recently deleted, where they stay for 90 days. Open it in Settings, on the General tab, under Your data, and press Restore to bring a meeting back. After 90 days, KeptNote deletes it for good. This does not use the macOS Trash. The Note menu also has Delete…, which asks first and moves the meeting to the same place.
You cannot rename or delete a meeting while it records.
