Desktop widgets on your Mac

KeptNote has three widgets for your Mac desktop and Notification Center: Record, Latest notes and Reef.

Add a widget

  1. Right-click an empty part of your desktop and choose Edit Widgets. You can also scroll to the foot of Notification Center and press Edit Widgets.

  2. Search for KeptNote, or find it in the list of apps.

  3. Choose Record, Latest notes or Reef, pick a size, and press the plus button. Drag the widget where you want it.

The widgets come with the KeptNote app. You do not install anything else. They need macOS 15, the same as KeptNote.

The three widgets

Record comes in small and medium. It shows a reef picture, the KeptNote shell and a Record button. Press it and KeptNote opens its start sheet. The widget starts nothing by itself. You press Start recording there. While a recording runs, the widget shows a light and a clock that counts on its own.

Latest notes comes in medium and large. It lists your most recent meetings with the time and how long each ran. The large size shows four. Press a meeting to open its note. While you record, the top of the widget shows the recording, and the large size puts the earlier meetings under Earlier. A note that is still being written says so.

Reef comes in small and medium. It shows one reef picture, a fish, a turtle, kelp or coral, and the picture changes through the day. Press it and KeptNote opens the Reef.

What a widget knows

A widget cannot read your library. KeptNote writes a small summary for the widgets: whether you are recording, the titles and times of your latest meetings, and whether you can record. That summary has no transcript and no note. It stays on your Mac.

The summary is rewritten when a recording starts or stops, and within about half a minute after your library changes. A widget can be a few moments behind.
