What the room mode records
In the room mode, KeptNote records from the microphone your Mac uses as its input. That is the input chosen in System Settings, under Sound. It does not record the sound your Mac plays.
The transcript has one speaker, named Room. KeptNote does not tell the people in the room apart.
Because it needs only the microphone, this mode does not need the Screen & System Audio Recording permission.
Start a recording
Open Home and press Record at the top right. You can also choose New Recording in the File menu, press Command-N, or choose New Recording from the KeptNote icon in the menu bar.
KeptNote starts at once. If no known call app is using the microphone, it records in the room. If one is, it records as a call. See Calls on your Mac.
A quick start names the meeting with the time, for example Meeting · 3:05 PM, and uses the General template. You can rename it while you record.
To choose for yourself, choose Detailed Setup… in the File menu, or press Option-Shift-Command-N. The Start a meeting sheet opens.
- Meeting title. This is optional. It uses the current time if you leave it empty.
- Capture. Choose In the room.
- Note shape. Choose a template, or press Browse templates.
- Folder. The meeting goes to Unfiled unless you choose a folder.
Then press Start recording.
What you see while it records
The window changes to the live meeting page. It opens on Notes.

The live meeting page. The title and a row of settings are at the top. The recording bar is at the bottom left.
- The title. It starts with a name KeptNote chose. Click it to type your own. A title you type is never replaced.
- A row under the title: the date, the mode (Call or In the room), the template, and a lock with Private on this Mac. The mode menu here changes the label only. It does not change how KeptNote records the meeting you are in.
- A page for your own notes. It says Write notes, or press / for templates. See Notes, quotes and time chips.
- The recording bar at the bottom left. It shows the input level, the time, a Transcript button, a pause button and a stop button.
- The Ask bar next to it. See Ask your meetings.
- The Notes and Reef switch at the top right.
Press Transcript in the recording bar to see words appear a few seconds after people say them. The live transcript is a preview. KeptNote builds the real transcript after you stop. The preview runs on your Mac, in English. If your Mac cannot run it on the device, the preview stays off and your recording is not affected.
If you close the window during a recording, the recording continues. While any other app is in front, a slim tab at the edge of your screen shows the level and the time. Point at it to open a card with the title, the live transcript, and the buttons to pause, stop and Open Notes. Drag the tab to move it. You can turn it off in Settings, under General, in During a meeting, with Live meeting indicator. The menu bar and the recording capsule has the details.
Get a clear recording
- Put the Mac in the middle of the table, close to the people who talk.
- Check the input in System Settings, under Sound, before you start. A recording from the wrong microphone is quiet.
- Watch the level bars at the bottom left. They move when KeptNote hears sound.
Stop
Press the stop button in the recording bar (its tooltip reads Stop and build your note), choose Stop and Save in the Note menu, or press Option-Command-Period. KeptNote then transcribes the audio and writes your note. Pause, resume and stop has the details.
