Mark a moment

One touch plants a flag in the recording. After the meeting, your note lists every flag with the words said at that moment.

Where this stands

KeptNote for iPhone and Apple Watch is coming to the App Store. It is not there yet. This article describes how marking works. The Mac app does not have Mark.

What a mark is

A mark says: this part matters. It costs one tap and takes your eyes off the meeting for a moment. KeptNote keeps the time of the mark, counting only the time that was recorded, so a pause in the middle does not throw it off.

Two taps within a fraction of a second count as one mark.

Ways to mark

  • The Mark button on the watch. It is the wide button under the level line on the recording screen. When you press it, it turns light and reads Marked with a check for a second, and a few bubbles rise. A small count beside it keeps the total.
  • Double Tap. On the recording screen, Double Tap presses Mark. It needs an Apple Watch Series 9, Ultra 2 or later. On the Ready screen, Double Tap starts a recording instead.
  • The Action button. On Apple Watch Ultra, assign the KeptNote control to the Action button. A press starts a recording. A press while it records marks the moment.
  • Siri. Say Mark this moment in KeptNote or Mark that in KeptNote. Siri answers with the time, for example Marked at 14 minutes.
  • The Live Activity. On the iPhone Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, Mark is one of the buttons. On the watch, the same Live Activity has Mark in the Smart Stack.
  • The Mark control. Mark this moment is a control you can put in Control Center, on the Lock Screen or on the iPhone Action button. See iPhone widgets and controls.

If you mark from the watch while the iPhone is out of reach, the watch keeps the mark and sends it when the iPhone is back. A mark for a watch recording travels with the audio.

Where marks show up

On the iPhone, a mark adds a line to your typed notes that reads Marked moment, with the time it was made.

When the note is written, KeptNote adds a section at the end called Moments you marked. Each mark is one line. The line holds the words that were said at that moment, taken from the transcript, and a time chip. Press the chip and the transcript opens at that spot, as for any other time chip. If nobody spoke near the mark, the line reads Marked moment with its chip. KeptNote does not invent words for it.

The notice that tells you the note is ready also counts your marks. See Live Activity, note ready and reminders.
